How Does The Virtual Base Network Operate?
There are several “differential” signals available to end users today, many of which experience satellite drift over time, effectively moving AB lines, field borders, and coverage areas within your fields. RTK corrections, known as real time kinematic, is consistently the most precise signal available providing repeatable sub inch accuracy. In DigiFarm’s infancy, the company’s focus was offering a cellular single base RTK correction service to clients. This solution offered clients a reliable RTK solution without having to maintain line of sight between their tractor and base station.

Now, a new service called DigiFarm VBN (Virtual Base Network) is available for clients who want to maximize accuracy and reliability. The picture below gives a visual description of how the DigiFarm Virtual Base Network works.

A vast network of DigiFarm base stations send data into central servers via the internet where the data is processed for clients to use. A cellular modem is installed in the tractor cab and is connected to the GPS receiver so that a wireless data connection can be established between the tractor GPS receiver and the DigiFarm servers.

The GPS receiver on the tractor sends its position into the DigiFarm servers through the cellular modem. The DigiFarm servers respond by creating a virtual base station in close proximity to the tractor and transmitting corrections to the tractors GPS receiver through the cellular modem. By creating a virtual base station for each vehicle that logs into the network, we’re able to offer superior accuracy compared to that of a single base RTK provider. This also provides our clients with exceptional redundancy and reliability.

There are basically two trypes of RTK in the ag market today, single baseline RTK and a network solution or a Virtual Base Netowk. In DigiFarm’s infancy, the company’s focus was offering a cellular single base RTK correction service to clients. This solution offered clients a reliable RTK solution without having to maintain line of sight between their tractor and base station. There are however many problems with “Single Base” RTK as outlined in the chart to the left. The VBN solution is much more reliable and accurate when compared to single base RTK and is the primary choice for many farmers across the midwest.
